This course will seek to make links between theory and classroom practice by exploring how an understanding of relevant aspects of the Science of Learning can inform pedagogy and approaches to learning. A variety of questioning strategies and thinking routines will be introduced, however the key focus will be on deepening understanding of how Thinking Frames can be utilised as common visual tools to scaffold and extend thinking in the inclusion context. Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCos), SEND Teachers and those who are interested in exploring how a range of tools and strategies can be used to support the development of metacognition and self-regulated learners with additional needs.
There are two options to access this Course; either Hybrid On-demand OR Live, online, Consultant-led.
Hybrid, On-demand Course Structure:
- Once you have registered you will receive access to our learning platform that contains all the micro videos for each module of the course.
- At any time to suit you, work your way through the on-demand modules.
- At the end of the first four modules, you can book a 30 minute, one to one session with one of our cognitive coaching team to explore and review the content and its practical application.
- Each module includes a range of learning activities. These include taking self reflective inventories to measure participants current levels of motivation and metacognition.
- On completion of the course participants will receive practitioner accreditation from Thinking Matters.
Live, Online Course, Consultant-led, Structure:

The online course consists of three x two-hour modules, facilitated using Zoom. The first two of these sessions seek to explore key metacognitive tools and strategies and participants are then encouraged to introduce these in their classroom practice over the following term. The final session provides an opportunity to review experiences and to consider how the tools can be used to further deepen and extend students’ thinking.
The training is facilitated by an experienced TM consultant and provides the opportunity for participants to interact, reflect, share thoughts and outcomes of activities and to clarify thinking. There will be opportunity to network with SENCos and SEND teachers from different schools. The format includes a combination of presentation, practical activities and opportunity for sharing practice and for discussion and reflection.
N.B. As participants will be expected to engage in discussion during the online sessions, access to a device with a working microphone and camera is essential.
Participants will receive a TM certificate on completion of the course.
